World Steel installs timber doors for offices and meeting rooms and steel doors (including fire doors) for plant rooms, escape stairs and stores in the final stage of a project, after plastering and floor finishes have been accepted. Defects in timber doors repaired on site rarely reach workshop quality, so checking the openings and protecting the product come first.

Preparation
- Openings built and plastered, with clear dimensions and lintel levels accepted by the supervising consultant and the project management team. Toilet doors: toilet tiling and threshold stones completed and accepted.
- Materials of the contract type and to the drawing sizes, well wrapped against scratches and stored in a dry place.
- Frame fixing screws line up with the concrete blocks built into the wall.
- Tools: drill, laser, screw gun, tape measure, brad nailer, saw, compressor.
Checking the opening (timber doors)
| Criterion | Permitted deviation |
|---|---|
| Opening size | ±3 mm |
| Wall thickness | ±2 mm |
| Wall twist | ±2 mm |
| Squareness of the opening | ±3 mm per side |
Timber door sequence
| Step | Work | Control |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Setting out | Restore the +1.00 m datum on the plaster or reveals. | Head level of the frame. |
| 2. Frame assembly | Assemble the frame on a flat floor; tight joints; pre-drill screw holes so the frame does not split. | Frame size against the opening. |
| 3. Drilling | Drill holes for expansion screws in the reveals to the number shown on the drawings. | Aligned with the built-in concrete blocks. |
| 4. Fixing and adjusting the frame | Set the frame in the opening; plumb it with a laser; wedge it with timber wedges; fix with D9/D10 steel screws. | Recheck plumb and square before hanging the leaf; call the supervising consultant to accept the frame. |
| 5. Filling the gap | Inject expanding foam into the frame gap (depending on the project method); trim excess foam and clean. | Gap filled, no foam on the frame face. |
| 6. Hinges and leaf | Fit hinges flush and tight to the leaf; hang the leaf to size; hinge number, spacing and type as designed. Fix the hinge-side jamb first, adjust the gap on the lock side, then fix the lock-side jamb. | Test opening and closing; even, flat gaps. |
| 7. Architraves | Even margin from frame to architrave as drawn (usually 15 mm); pins 200–250 mm apart; crisp mitres. | Architraves plumb and true. |
| 8. Locks and handles | Cut the lock pocket (possibly before hanging the leaf) and the strike in the frame; fit the lock after the leaf is accepted. | Test the lock. |
| 9. Protection | Touch up and wrap in plastic until handover. | No cleaning chemicals that discolour the finish. |

Steel doors and fire doors
- Check the plastered opening against the shop drawing; mark levels from the +1000 datum.
- Fix the frame with D9/D10 steel screws, expansion bolts or brackets as per the shop drawing, into the concrete blocks in the wall; wedge and check plumb and square before tightening; plug the screw holes in the frame with rubber caps.
- Hinges flush; corrosion-resistant screws tightened flush with the hinge; adjust the leaf gap, then fix the lock-side jamb.
- Fit locks and door closers after the leaf is accepted. Fire doors: fill the frame-to-wall gap with fire-rated foam or seals where the design requires it.
- Apply silicone, clean, carry out final acceptance and cover with protective film.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Remedy |
|---|---|
| Opening built to the wrong size and cut back | Accept the openings before taking over the area |
| Architraves not tight to the wall | Accept wall flatness after plastering; fill small gaps with foam and silicone |
| Cracked architraves, mitres not meeting | Pre-drill, machine cut mitres, replace damaged pieces |
| Wall damaged during installation | Drill in the right direction, use timber wedges, repair before final painting |
| Wall paint on architraves | Protect with plastic; painters clean up without stripping chemicals |
| Missing hinge screws | Fit all screws |
| Architrave proud because it sits over the skirting; gaps at the skirting base | Replace the skirting, refit the architrave; use full-length skirting pieces |
