Overview

Cables are sized for load current, voltage drop, short-circuit withstand, installation method (tray, conduit, buried) and ambient temperature. XLPE runs hotter than PVC, so it carries more current for the same size.

Fire safety circuits (fire pumps, pressurisation fans, fire alarm) use fire-resistant cable to IEC 60331. Public areas and data centres often require low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) cable.

Uses

  • 01Risers and feeders to distribution boards
  • 02MV feeders to substations
  • 03Fire-resistant cables for life-safety circuits
  • 04Power cables to production machines

Selection and acceptance checks

  • Check size, cores, voltage rating and standard printed on the cable
  • Insulation resistance test before energising
  • Check bending radius and terminations

Reference standards
