Overview
Zinc-rich primers work like galvanizing: the zinc sacrifices itself to protect steel at scratches. Inorganic silicates resist heat and abrasion; epoxy versions are easier to apply and compatible with most topcoats.
They need abrasive blasting to Sa 2½ per ISO 8501-1 with a suitable profile. They are the standard primer of ISO 12944 systems for corrosivity categories C4 and C5.
Uses
- 01Steelwork in chemical and coastal plants
- 02Bridges, substations and energy structures
- 03Outdoor tanks and pipelines
- 04Primer under duplex systems on steel
Selection and acceptance checks
- Check surface preparation Sa 2½ and profile
- Measure dry film thickness (DFT) as specified
- Control humidity and dew point during application
