Overview
High-strength bolts are used in shear, tension or slip-critical connections when tightened to the specified pretension. Assemblies should come matched from one maker to a standard such as ASTM F3125, EN 14399 or JIS B 1186.
Tightening methods include turn-of-nut, calibrated wrench, direct tension indicators (DTI) and tension-control bolts. Faying surfaces of slip-critical joints must be prepared and protected to the design surface class.
Uses
- 01Beam-to-column connections and beam splices
- 02Slip-critical joints in towers and bridges
- 03Portal frame connections of PEB
- 04Dynamically loaded structures and crane girders
Selection and acceptance checks
- Check the property class marked on bolt heads and nuts
- Pre-installation pretension test per lot
- Check torque or the tightening method after installation
Reference standards
