Overview
Toughened glass is several times stronger than annealed glass and breaks into small blunt pieces; laminated glass holds fragments on its PVB or SGP interlayer, so it is used for balustrades, glass roofs and overhead glazing. Insulated units with air or inert gas between panes reduce heat and noise.
Toughened glass can break spontaneously from nickel sulphide inclusions, so high-rise façades often require heat-soak testing. Selection must consider wind load, human impact and the building’s energy targets.
Uses
- 01Façades, windows and doors
- 02Balustrades, glass roofs and floors
- 03Office and cleanroom partitions
- 04Energy-efficient façades (Low-E)
Selection and acceptance checks
- Check certification marks, glass type and thickness
- Require heat-soak testing for toughened façade glass at height
- Check energy data (U, SHGC) of insulated units
