Overview
Plate is either rolled from slabs or cut to length from hot-rolled coil (HRC). Typical structural thicknesses run from 6 to 50 mm; thicker plates loaded through their thickness often need ultrasonic testing for laminations.
Common grades include SS400 and SM490 (JIS), A36 and A572 Gr.50 (ASTM) and S275 and S355 (EN). The grade follows the design strength, weldability (carbon equivalent limit) and the required impact toughness at test temperature.
Uses
- 01Webs and flanges of built-up beams
- 02Gusset plates, column base plates and stiffeners
- 03Tanks, silos and hoppers
- 04Platforms and wear plates
Selection and acceptance checks
- Check grade, thickness and heat number on the mill certificate
- Ultrasonic lamination check for thick plates loaded through thickness when specified
- Check the surface for pitting, heavy rust and mill scale
