Overview
Built-up members are made from web and flange plates cut from steel plate, fitted and joined with submerged-arc welding. Engineers can choose each plate thickness and taper the depth to follow the moment diagram, which saves steel compared with a rolled section on the same span.
Quality depends on the welding procedure, qualified welders, straightening after welding and non-destructive testing (UT, MT). The World Steel factory fabricates built-up members to AWS D1.1, EN 1090-2 and AS/NZS 5131.
Uses
- 01Long-span pre-engineered building frames
- 02Tapered columns and rafters
- 03Heavy crane girders
- 04Transfer beams and process platform girders
Selection and acceptance checks
- Check the welding procedures (WPS/PQR) and welder qualifications
- Inspect welds visually and by UT/MT at the rate in the specification
- Measure flange squareness, camber and depth after straightening
