Overview
Weathering steel contains alloying elements such as copper, chromium, nickel and phosphorus that make the rust layer dense and slow down corrosion under wet-dry cycles. Its red-brown surface is popular in architecture.
It is not suitable for constantly wet areas, high sea-salt exposure or standing water. Good drainage details and matching weld consumables are needed so welds resist corrosion like the parent steel.
Uses
- 01Architectural façades and fins
- 02Steel and pedestrian bridges
- 03Low-maintenance outdoor structures
- 04Landscaping and feature walls
Selection and acceptance checks
- Confirm a suitable environment (not constantly wet, not close to the sea)
- Use weld consumables matched to weathering steel
- Detail for drainage to avoid ponding and rust staining
